Couples Counselling in Calgary

Couples Therapy in Calgary | Golden Leaf Therapy

What Happens Between Two People

Relationships, like individuals, carry history. What brings two people together can become obscured over time – by the pressures of family, culture, work, children, or internal expectations that were shaped long before they met. At Golden Leaf Therapy, I work with couples to uncover the patterns that repeat, trace them back to their origins, and help partners learn how to live relationally – with each other, and with themselves.

I draw from Relational Life Therapy (RLT), which brings a direct, skill-based approach while holding firm to the belief that relationship work involves understanding not just what is happening, but how those dynamics were formed. Informed by early family experiences and the culture we come from, many of our ways of relating are adaptations – ones that once helped us survive, but no longer serve connection.

My Approach to Couples Counselling

The first few sessions offer space for understanding. I meet with you together, and/or individually, to gather your relational history – how you each came to be the way you are, and how that shapes your current dynamic. From there, we begin identifying the “dance” – the repetitive interactions that maintain disconnection.

Through this process:

  • We examine how early patterns and cultural narratives shape your current relationship.
  • We explore how power, boundaries, and self-esteem function within your dynamic.
  • We name the adaptive roles each partner has taken on – and work toward changing them through relational accountability.
  • I coach you through new ways of speaking, listening, and showing up – not just to your partner, but to yourself.

This work is challenging and intimate. It is not about quick fixes, but about meaningful change. RLT invites honesty and directness with compassion.

Common Issues I help With

  • Ongoing arguments or circular conflicts
  • Emotional distance or a loss of intimacy
  • Breaches of trust
  • Life-stage transitions, parenting stress
  • Cultural and intergenerational tensions
  • Interfaith or interracial relationship challenges

Why I offer Couples Work

My commitment to couples work is personal. I’ve done this work in my own life – facing hard truths and building something stronger in their place. I believe that individuals are not separate from their relationships. To change ourselves is to change how we love, and vice versa. The well-being of our partnerships has a generational impact – it affects how we parent, how we live, how we carry forward.

What to Expect

First Few Sessions: Includes a full intake of your relationship history, goals, and current concerns.

Subsequent Sessions: Focus on relational patterns, accountability, and learning tools to shift dynamics.

Couples sessions are 90 minutes long. With couples work there is a lot of ground to cover and the typical 60 minutes is not enough to do good, meaningful, and effective work.
